You've likely seen the prices for Japanese RC parts and thought: "Wait, why is it so much more expensive in the UK? It's just a simple currency conversion, right?"
That is a common question, and it’s a fair one. The Japanese label price is only the starting point.
Here is the breakdown of what actually happens... Spoiler: It's not always cheaper.
What Actually Happens
Japan has a 10% consumption tax, but the price you see on the tag often doesn’t include it. Most Japanese websites also list their prices excluding the tax, which makes the product appear much cheaper than the actual Japanese RRP.
When anyone brings parts from Japan to the UK, the cost doesn’t stop at what they buy it for.
Between Japan and your pit table there is:
Currency conversion & payment fees
International shipping
Import VAT (20%)
Customs & handling fees
Additional courier charges
Time spent sourcing, ordering, receiving and checking stock
By the time a product lands in the UK, it has a true landed cost. Then there’s the UK business side of things, like online and/or physical store costs, processing the orders, packing them and getting them to you safely.
And that’s you add any business margin to keep it all going, like making it easy for you to get the Japan-made products in the first place.
Prices aren’t "inflated"; it’s what happens when you factor in all of the real-world costs.
Why Not Just Import It Yourself?
You could do this, and are fully welcome to, but here’s what that usually means.
To illustrate the difference in costs, let's look at an example of the FR-D7 Core Kit. We will compare the typical cost breakdown for a personal import versus the final retail price from Zerofeel.
This comparison highlights the fees and duties that often surprise personal importers, which are already factored into the Zerofeel UK price.
At first glance, importing that chassis for ¥85,481 (approx. £405) looks like a steal, until you add all the additional costs involved. Once you add insured shipping, 4.7% duty, 20% VAT, and the £13.50 courier fee, your final total hits roughly £545 (at the exchange rate of publishing this).
The initial "saving" vanishes once mandatory UK fees are applied, leaving you paying more than our £529 local price for a kit with no UK support.
What You Get With Zerofeel and Other UK Businesses
When you buy from Zerofeel, or elsewhere in the UK, you’re buying certainty.
People Who Care: We’re enthusiasts first. You’re dealing with passionate people who actually want to help you get the right part for your build, not just a faceless warehouse.
Clear UK Pricing: What you see is what you pay.
No Hidden Charges: No "handling fees" or surprise VAT bills at the door.
Real Support: Technical advice from people who understand the parts and the UK scene.
UK-Based Returns: If something’s wrong, you aren't shipping it back across the world.
It’s easy to forget that local shops do more than just move boxes. When you buy locally, you’re keeping the UK RC scene healthy.
UK businesses are the ones who are:
Stocking the 'boring' spares you need on a Friday to make a Saturday session.
Providing technical advice in your timezone and language.
Sponsoring tracks and events that give us all a place to run our cars.
We and others work directly with authentic Japanese brands like Wrap-Up Next and ETOworks to bring you the products that you want.
You’re paying for peace of mind, time saved, and someone standing behind what you bought.
The Bottom Line
We know that at first glance, the UK price looks higher than a straight currency conversion. And yes, sometimes it is a bit more than importing it yourself—but once you factor in the shipping, the 20% VAT, and those annoying courier fees, the difference usually isn’t as big as it looks.
When you buy from us or a UK business, you aren’t just paying for a part in a box. You’re paying for:
Local Service & Support: Someone to talk to if a part doesn't fit or a build goes wrong.
The Future of the Scene: Every purchase helps us grow, bring in more niche brands, and stock even more variety.
The Ultimate Goal: Supporting UK shops keeps the dream alive of expanding into physical locations and, eventually, opening more dedicated tracks for the community to use.
Instead of gambling on customs surprises, you get a fixed price, a known delivery time, and a business that is actively reinvesting back into the hobby you love.
